Isaiah 61 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

This chapter holds a promise so wonderful that, hundreds of years later, Jesus stood up and read these very words out loud - and said they were about Him.

Today's Story

Isaiah had the most joyful job to announce. He said, “God's Spirit is on me, and He has sent me to bring good news!”

What kind of good news? The best kind. “Good news for people who are hurting. A gentle hug for people who are sad. Freedom for people who feel stuck and trapped. God is coming to make everything better.”

Then Isaiah painted some beautiful pictures of what God does. “God takes sad gray ashes and gives a crown of pretty flowers instead. He takes crying and turns it into a happy song. He takes a heavy, droopy heart and fills it up with sunshine.”

God's people felt like a tree that had been chopped down. But God said He would help them grow tall and strong again, like a big oak tree standing proud in the sun.

“I am SO happy in God!” Isaiah said. “He has dressed me up in joy, the way a bride or groom dresses up for the best day ever.”

And hundreds of years later, Jesus stood up in front of everyone, read these very words, and said, “Today, this came true.” He is the One who brings the good news.

Talk About It

  1. What is some good news that made you really happy - maybe something that happened today or this week?
  2. Isaiah says God trades ashes for flowers and crying for a happy song. If you could hand God one sad thing to trade for joy, what would it be?
  3. Jesus read these words and said, “Today this came true.” What does it mean to you that Jesus came to bring this kind of good news?
