Jeremiah was a prophet — a person who carried messages from God. This is the day God first called him, when he was still very young.
Today's Story
One day God spoke to a young man named Jeremiah. What He said was a big surprise.
“Before I made you inside your mother, I knew you,” God said. “Before you were born, I set you apart. I chose you to speak for Me to the people.”
Jeremiah's eyes went wide. “But I don't know how to speak! I'm only a child!”
God answered him gently. “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go where I send you. You must say what I tell you. And do not be afraid — I am with you. I will keep you safe.”
Then God reached out and touched Jeremiah's mouth. “There,” God said. “I have put My words in your mouth.”
God showed Jeremiah some pictures, too — a branch and a pot — to help him understand that God was watching over His people and would do what He said.
The job ahead would be hard. Jeremiah would have to tell people things they didn't want to hear. But God promised, “I am with you. Don't be afraid.”
And that was enough. Jeremiah was young, but God was big. So Jeremiah said yes.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Has anyone ever told you that you were “too little” to do something? How did that feel?
- God knew Jeremiah before he was even born. How does it feel to know God knew you that long ago too?
- God told Jeremiah, “Don't be afraid — I am with you.” What is something hard you could do today if you remembered God was right there with you?
