John 10 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Jesus calls Himself a shepherd — and tells us what kind of shepherd He is: the very best one, who would do anything for His sheep.

Today's Story

Jesus told the people a beautiful word-picture about Himself. “I am the good shepherd,” He said.

“A good shepherd knows every one of his sheep by name,” Jesus explained. “And the sheep know his voice. When he calls, they come, because they trust him. He leads them to green grass and cool water and keeps them safe.”

“And here's what makes Me the GOOD shepherd,” Jesus said. “A hired worker runs away when a wolf comes — he doesn't really care about the sheep. But the good shepherd would never run away. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Jesus was saying: I love you so much I would give My very life to save you. (And He did!)

“I know My sheep, and My sheep know Me,” Jesus said. “I give them life forever, and no one can ever snatch them out of My hand.”

That's the kind of shepherd Jesus is: He knows your name, He hears you, He keeps you safe, and He loves you enough to give everything for you.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, knows every sheep by name. How does it feel to know Jesus knows YOUR name?
  2. The good shepherd would give his life for his sheep — and Jesus did. How much does that show Jesus loves us?
  3. The sheep know the shepherd's voice and follow. How can we learn to know Jesus' voice and follow Him?
