John 13 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

On His last night, the King of everything kneels down to do the dirtiest, humblest job — to teach His friends the secret of true greatness.

Today's Story

It was Jesus' last supper with His friends. Their feet were dusty and dirty from walking the roads in sandals. Normally the lowest servant would wash everyone's feet — but there was no servant there, and nobody wanted to do such a dirty job.

So Jesus — the Teacher, the King, the Son of God — got up, wrapped a towel around His waist, filled a basin with water, and knelt down. And He began to wash His friends' dirty feet, one by one. The King of everything, washing feet!

Peter was shocked. “Lord, You shouldn't wash MY feet!” But Jesus said, “If I don't wash you, you can't share life with Me.” So Peter said, “Then wash all of me!”

When Jesus finished, He said, “I'm your Teacher and Lord, and I washed your feet. So you should serve each other too. I've given you an example. The greatest people in My kingdom are the ones who serve.”

Then Jesus gave them the most important rule of all: “Love one another. Just as I have loved you, love each other. Everyone will know you're My followers if you love one another.”
