Judges 17 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

When everyone just does whatever they want, things get all mixed up — and a man named Micah shows us why.

Today's Story

In those days, the Bible says, there was no king in Israel, and everyone just did whatever they thought was right in their own eyes. They weren't following God's ways; they were making up their own.

A man named Micah did exactly that. Instead of worshiping the true God the way God had taught, Micah made his own little idols out of silver and set up his own homemade shrine. He even hired his own personal priest! Micah thought, “Now God will surely bless me, because I have all these religious things.” But he had it all backwards.

You see, you can't just make up your own “god” or worship however you feel like and expect it to be real. The true God isn't a silver statue you keep in your house. He's the living God who made everything, and He wants us to know and worship HIM, His way, with our whole hearts.

It's a lesson for us: real faith isn't about doing whatever WE think is right, or making up our own version of God. It's about knowing and following the one true God, the way He has shown us.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Everyone did “what they thought was right” instead of following God. Why can that get us into trouble?
  2. Micah made his own idols and thought God would bless him. Why can't we just make up our own way to God?
  3. The true God made everything and wants to be known. How can we worship the real God, His way?
