Leviticus is a book where God teaches His people how to come close to Him.
God's people had a special tent where they met with Him. God showed them how to bring Him gifts.
Today's Story
God's people wanted to be close to Him. But how do you come near to a God who is so big and so good and so holy?
So God taught them a way. He said, “When you want to come to Me, bring Me a gift.” It might be a young bull, or a sheep, or even a little bird, if that was all a family had.
The person would bring the very best animal they had — not a leftover one, but a good one. They laid their hand on its head. It was their way of saying, “This gift stands in my place. I give it to God with my whole heart.”
Then the gift was placed on the altar, and the smoke rose up toward the sky. The Bible says it was “a pleasing smell to the Lord.” God was glad. His people had come to Him the way He showed them.
It was God's kind idea. He didn't leave His people guessing. He made a way for them to come close.
A Big Word
Talk About It
- If you wanted to give a gift to someone you love very much, what would you pick? Would you pick your best or your leftovers?
- God's people brought their best to God. What is one good thing you could give to God — maybe your time, your kindness, or a song?
- God made a way for His people to come close to Him. How does it feel to know God WANTS you near Him?
