Luke 9 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

The disciples argue about who's the BEST — and Jesus flips their idea of greatness upside down.

Today's Story

One day, the disciples started arguing with each other. What about? About which of THEM was the greatest! Who was the most important? Who was the best?

Jesus knew what they were thinking. So He did something surprising. He took a little child and stood the child right beside Him. Then He said, “Whoever welcomes this little child welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes God who sent Me.”

Then Jesus told them the secret of true greatness: “The one who is the LEAST among you all — that's the one who is the greatest.”

The disciples thought being great meant being the biggest, the bossiest, the most important. But Jesus said it's the opposite! In God's kingdom, the way up is down. The greatest are the humble ones who welcome others — especially the small and the overlooked — and who put others first.

Talk About It

  1. The disciples argued about who was the best. Have you ever wanted to be the best or the first?
  2. Jesus said the LEAST is the greatest. What do you think it means that “the way up is down” in God's kingdom?
  3. Jesus welcomed a little child. How can you welcome and include someone who's small or left out?
