Matthew 6 for Kids

For Kids · 5 min with a grown-up

Jesus is teaching a big crowd on a hillside. Someone wants to know: how do I talk to God? Jesus shows them — and it's simpler than they thought.

Today's Story

Jesus sat on a grassy hill, and a huge crowd leaned in to listen. Somebody wanted to know how to pray.

Jesus said, “You don't need fancy words. You don't need a big show. Your Father already knows what you need before you even ask Him. So just talk to Him. Here, I'll show you how.”

And He taught them a prayer so simple that even a small child can learn it by heart.

Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored. May your kingdom come. May what you want to happen be done on earth as it is done in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, just as we also have forgiven those who sin against us. Keep us from sinning when we are tempted. Save us from the evil one.

Matthew 6:9–13

Then Jesus said something that makes worrying melt away. “Look at the birds,” He said. “They don't plant gardens or fill up barns — and your Father feeds every one of them. Aren't you worth much more than birds?”

“And look at the wildflowers in the field. They don't sew themselves a single stitch of clothing — but not even a king in his fanciest robe was ever dressed as beautifully as one little flower. If God dresses up the grass like that, don't you think He'll take care of you?”

“So don't worry about tomorrow,” Jesus said. “Your Father knows exactly what you need. Just ask Him — the way a child asks a good dad. He's listening.”

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Jesus said you can call God “Father” and just talk to Him — no fancy words. If you could tell God anything at all right now, what would you say?
  2. Jesus said God feeds the birds, so He'll surely take care of you. What is something you've been worried about that you could hand to God tonight?
  3. In the prayer, Jesus says “forgive us, as we forgive others.” Is there someone you need to forgive — or someone you need to say sorry to?
