Matthew 7 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Jesus finishes His big hillside teaching with a question that matters more than almost any other: what are you building your life on?

Today's Story

Jesus was finishing His teaching on the hill, and He gave the crowd some last things to hold onto.

“Treat other people the way you want to be treated,” He said. “That's the whole thing, right there.”

“And keep asking God,” Jesus said. “Ask, and it will be given to you. Knock, and the door will open. Your Father in heaven loves to give good gifts to His children.”

Then Jesus told one last story. “Two people each built a house. The wise one dug down deep and built on solid rock. The foolish one took the easy way and built on the sand.”

“Then the rains came pouring down. The rivers rose. The winds blew and beat against both houses. The house on the rock? It stood firm and strong. But the house on the sand…” Jesus paused. “…it fell with a great CRASH.”

“Whoever hears My words and does them,” Jesus said, “is like that wise builder on the rock.”

The crowd was amazed. Jesus wasn't just teaching nice ideas — He was giving them a rock to build their whole lives on.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Jesus said to treat others the way you want to be treated. How do YOU want to be treated? How could you treat someone that way today?
  2. The wise builder built on rock; the foolish one took the easy way on sand. What does it look like to “build on the rock” — to do what Jesus says even when it's hard?
  3. Jesus said to keep asking God, like knocking on a door. What's something you could ask God for?
