Matthew 9 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Jesus does something only God can do — and then invites the most unlikely person to follow Him.

Today's Story

Some friends carried a man who couldn't walk to Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith, He said something surprising: “Cheer up! Your sins are forgiven.”

Some people grumbled — “Only God can forgive sins!” So Jesus said, “Which is easier — to forgive, or to heal? I'll show you I can do both.” He turned to the man: “Get up, take your mat, and go home.” And the man stood up, completely healed, and walked home praising God!

Later, Jesus walked past a tax collector's booth. Tax collectors were not liked — people thought of them as cheaters. But Jesus looked at one named Matthew and said, “Follow Me.” And Matthew got up and followed right away!

Jesus even went to dinner at Matthew's house with lots of people nobody else wanted to be around. The proud leaders complained. But Jesus said, “Healthy people don't need a doctor — sick people do. I came for those who know they need God's help.”

Jesus loves and welcomes everyone — even the ones other people give up on.
