Numbers 1 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible. It tells how God led His big family through the desert, all the way to a brand-new home.

Today's Story

God's family had grown VERY big. So God said to Moses, “Count the people. I want to know how many there are.”

So Moses began to count. He counted the families, one by one. He counted the men who were strong enough to help and protect everyone. One, two, ten, a hundred, a thousand — and the counting kept going and going!

When Moses was finally done, the number was huge. There were so many people that you could not have counted them in a whole week. God's little family from long ago had become a giant crowd, just like He had promised.

Why did God want them counted? Because every single person mattered to Him. He did not just see a big crowd. He saw each name. He knew each face. Not one person was forgotten or left out.

God was getting His big family ready for a long trip. And He wanted them to know He was watching over every one of them.

A Big Word

Talk About It

  1. Have you ever felt lost in a big crowd, like at a store or a park? How did that feel?
  2. God knew the name of every single person He counted. How does it feel to know God knows YOUR name?
  3. Who are the people in our family God knows and loves? Let's name them.
