Psalms 1 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Psalm 1 is the doorway into the whole book of Psalms. It shows two ways to live — and which one grows.

Today's Story

The very first psalm asks a question: what makes a person truly happy and strong?

It says: happy is the person who doesn't follow bad advice, but loves God's words and thinks about them day and night.

That person, the psalm says, is like a tree planted right beside a stream. Its roots drink deep. Its leaves stay green even when the sun is hot. It gives fruit at just the right time. Nothing can shake it.

But a person who ignores God is like a dried-up leaf — or like chaff, the light papery bits left over from wheat — that the wind just blows away. There's nothing to hold them down.

Two ways to live. One sinks its roots down by the water. One blows away in the wind. And God watches over the way of everyone who loves Him.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. The happy person “delights” in God's words. What's something you delight in — love so much you can't get enough?
  2. A tree by the stream stays green even when it's hot and dry. How does staying close to God help you when life gets hard?
  3. The chaff just blows away because it has no roots. What helps YOU stay rooted and steady?
