Psalm 37 is a song full of calm, wise advice from King David, who was now an old man who had seen a lot of life.
Today's Story
King David was old now. He had lived a long, long time and learned a lot. So in this song he sits down, like a kind grandpa, to share what he knows.
Here is the first thing David says: “Do not get all upset about people who do wrong.” You know how sometimes someone is unkind, or breaks the rules, and it looks like nothing bad happens to them? It can make your tummy twist up. You might even feel jealous, like they got away with it and that is not fair!
David says: do not let that fill up your heart. Being upset and jealous only makes you feel yucky inside. Those feelings are like trying to hold a fistful of sand - the tighter you squeeze, the worse it feels.
So what should we do instead? David gives the answer, and it is so simple: “Trust in the Lord and do good.” That is the whole secret. Do not spend your day watching what unkind people do. Spend your day trusting God and doing the next good thing in front of you. Be kind. Tell the truth. Help someone.
And David says we can be patient and wait for God, because God sees everything. He always sets things right in the end. We can leave that part to Him - and just keep doing good.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- Have you ever seen someone break the rules and it seemed like they got away with it? How did that make you feel inside?
- David says being upset and jealous only makes us feel yucky. Instead he says, “Trust God and do good.” What is one good thing you could do tomorrow?
- Trusting God means we do not have to fix everything ourselves - God sees it all and sets it right. What is something you can let God take care of?
