Psalm 39 is a quiet, thinking song King David sang when he was trying to be careful with his words and put his hope in God.
Today's Story
King David was having a hard day. Big feelings were bubbling up inside him, and he really wanted to say something he might be sorry for later.
So David made a careful choice. “I will watch what I say,” he decided. “I will guard my mouth.” He held the angry words in instead of letting them spill out.
Then David started to think about how fast life goes. A whole day feels long when you're a kid, but the years zoom by quicker than you'd believe. “Lord, show me how short my life is,” he prayed. He wanted to use his days well and not waste them.
And in the middle of all that thinking, David found the most important thing of all. He said, “Lord, what do I look for now? My hope is in You.”
That was it. Not more stuff. Not getting his own way. Just God. David put his whole heart on God like setting both feet on solid ground, and he felt steady again.
A Big Word
Memory Verse
Talk About It
- David held back words he might be sorry for. When is it hard for you to hold back angry words?
- David said his hope was in God, not in getting more stuff. What is something you really want - and how is that different from God?
- Life goes by fast. What is one good way you could use today?
