Psalms 79 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Psalm 79 is a sad song. Something very precious was broken, and God's people were hurting. So they did the best thing you can do when you are sad - they told God all about it.

Today's Story

Have you ever had something you loved get broken or taken away? Maybe a special toy, or a place you loved. It makes your heart hurt.

That is what happened to God's people. Their beautiful city, and even God's special house where they went to worship, got knocked down by people who came to fight. The people were so sad. They felt like crying.

So they talked to God about it. They didn't hide their sad feelings. They asked, “How long, God? How long until things are better?” It is okay to ask God hard questions when you hurt.

Then they asked God for two things. First, “Please help us.” And second, “Please forgive us when we've done wrong, and make our hearts clean.”

And even though they were sad, they remembered something that made them feel safe. They said, “We are Your people. We are like sheep, and You are our Shepherd. We will say thank You to You forever.”

The city was broken. But they still belonged to God - and nothing could break that.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Has something you loved ever broken or gone away? How did that feel?
  2. God's people told Him their sad feelings instead of hiding them. Why do you think it helps to tell God when you're sad?
  3. The people are sad, but they still belong to God like sheep belong to a shepherd. What is a way a shepherd takes care of sheep?
