Psalms 88 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Psalm 88 is the saddest song in the whole book. A man named Heman wrote it on a very hard day. It shows us something important: you can talk to God even when you feel sad.

Today's Story

Most songs in the Bible start sad and end happy. This one is different.

A man named Heman was having one of the hardest times of his life. He felt sad all the way down. He felt lonely. Everything around him seemed dark, like nighttime that wouldn't turn into morning.

And do you know what Heman did? He told God all of it. He didn't pretend to be okay. He didn't hide his tears. He prayed, “Lord, I cry out to You. Every single morning, my prayer comes to You.”

Heman kept talking to God even when he felt awful. Even when he couldn't feel God close. He kept reaching out, every morning, like knocking on a door he believed would open someday.

This song teaches us something brave and true: when you feel really sad, you don't have to put on a happy face for God. You can tell Him exactly how you feel. He is big enough to hold your saddest feelings - and He never stops listening, even on the darkest day.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. When you feel sad, do you ever try to hide it? Heman told God the whole truth. What would you want to tell God about a sad or hard day?
  2. Heman kept praying every morning, even when he didn't feel happy. Why do you think he kept talking to God anyway?
  3. If a friend was feeling as sad as Heman, what is one kind thing you could do or say to help them?
