Psalms 87 for Kids

For Kids · 3 min with a grown-up

Psalm 87 is a happy song about God's special city. But the best part is what God says about the people who belong to Him.

Today's Story

The singers wrote a song about a city - God's own city, called Zion. They loved it so much they sang, “Glorious things are said about you, city of God!”

But then the song does something surprising. It starts talking about people from faraway places. People from Egypt. People from Babylon. People from lands across the sea. People who lived nowhere near the city at all.

And God looks at each one. He opens His big book, and next to their names He writes something wonderful: “This one was born here. This one belongs to Me.”

Isn't that amazing? You don't have to come from the right town. You don't have to speak the right words. When God counts His people, He looks at you and says, “Yes. You belong with Me.”

The song ends with music. People are singing and dancing, and they say, “All my happiness comes from You!” That is what it feels like to belong to God - like a party where everyone is glad you came.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Where do you feel like you really belong - a place where people are happy you're there? What makes it feel that way?
  2. In this song, God writes people's names in His book no matter where they come from. How does it feel to know God wants you to belong with Him?
  3. The song ends with singing and dancing. What is something you could do to show God you're happy to be His?
