The mighty men, the city's defenders, are trodden underfoot like nothing. God has 'called an assembly,' summoning the very armies as one might summon worshipers to a feast, but this gathering is for crushing. The reversal is bitter: the language of holy assembly turned to the language of slaughter.
The winepress is among the Bible's starkest pictures of judgment. Grapes are trodden until they burst and their juice runs red, and so the young men of Judah are crushed until their lifeblood flows. The image is violent because the reality was violent. Scripture later takes up this same winepress when it speaks of the day God treads out the wrath of the nations, and of the One who treads it alone.
