What Does Lamentations 1:5 Mean?
For the first time the poem names the deeper cause. The enemy's triumph is real, but it is not the final explanation. Above the armies stands the LORD, who has afflicted the city for the multitude of her transgressions. This is the hardest truth Lamentations will hold: the suffering is deserved, and God's hand is in it.
Yet naming sin does not make the grief any smaller. The same verse that confesses guilt watches the children driven into captivity before a gloating foe. Honest faith can say both things at once, that the judgment is just and that it is unbearable to watch. The poem refuses to let either truth silence the other.
