Lamentations 5:15 Meaning and Explanation

'The joy of our heart is ceased.' The inner gladness that once animated the people is gone, extinguished by sorrow. This is not merely the loss of outward celebration but the death of joy itself within the heart. The wellspring of their happiness has run dry.

'Our dance is turned into mourning.' What was once dancing, the bodily expression of festival gladness, has become mourning. The reversal is complete: celebration has become lamentation. Yet Scripture elsewhere holds out the hope of the opposite turning, that God can turn mourning into dancing again. By naming how their dance became mourning, the people implicitly long for the day when God might reverse it once more, restoring the joy that grief has taken away.
