What Does Luke 1:34 Mean?

Mary's question differs from that of Zacharias. He asked for proof; she asks about means — how shall this be, seeing she knows not a man? She does not doubt the promise; she wonders at its way.

Faith is allowed its honest questions. Mary believes God's word and still asks how God will keep it, and the angel honors the question with an answer rather than a rebuke. The Lord welcomes the seeking mind that comes in trust. Asking how is not the same as asking whether.
