What Does Luke 1:74 Mean?
Zacharias names the purpose of rescue: that we, delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear. Freedom is given for worship — the very demand of the exodus: let my people go, that they may serve me.
God does not free his people into aimlessness but into joyful, unafraid service. Fear had always shadowed worship — fear of enemies, of judgment, of failure. The salvation Christ brings removes the dread without removing the reverence, so that serving God becomes the gladdest liberty we know.
