What Does Luke 10:28 Mean?
The test ends with the tester commended. Jesus affirms that the scholar has read the law truly — life lies along the road of love for God and neighbour, as Leviticus 18:5 had said. Then comes the turn from knowing to doing: this do, and thou shalt live.
The command in the Greek calls for continuing action — keep doing this, as the tenor of a life. Right answers do not yet make a right life; love is a practice before it is a position. The conversation has quietly moved from what shall I do to whether he will do it, and the next verse shows him reaching for an exit.
