The spirit comes back to find its old dwelling improved: swept and set in order. Nothing worse has moved in; but nothing better has either.
Swept and garnished is the portrait of mere self-improvement -- vices cleared, habits tidied, and the throne of the heart still vacant. A clean emptiness has no defense. The heart was made to be indwelt, and if its rightful King does not fill it, its old tyrant will return to apply.
