What Does Luke 11:41 Mean?
Jesus prescribes the cure. Instead of rinsing cups, give of such things as ye have -- give from within, in mercy to the poor -- and behold, everything is clean.
Almsgiving here is not a payment for purity but its evidence: a heart that has turned from grasping (Luke 11:39) to giving has been cleansed at the source, and the cleanness runs outward through everything it touches. Generosity is what a clean inside looks like in public.
