What Does Luke 11:54 Mean?
Luke closes the scene with the language of the hunt: lying in ambush, they watch Jesus' mouth for a single seizable word, raw material for a formal accusation.
The contrast could not be sharper: the chapter opened with a disciple asking words from Jesus' mouth to learn to pray, and it ends with enemies watching his mouth for grounds to destroy him. The same words of Christ are bread to one hearer and offense to another. They never did catch him in a word; in the end he was condemned for telling the truth (Luke 22:70-71).
