What Does Luke 13:21 Mean?
The second picture moves indoors. A woman works a little leaven into three measures of meal — a great batch, bread enough for a feast (compare Genesis 18:6) — and hides it there until the whole is leavened.
Leaven works unseen, silently, from within, and it does not stop halfway. So the reign of God enters a life, a home, a world: hidden in the dough of ordinary days, changing everything it touches until nothing is left unchanged. The verse is patient hope for all who see little outward result. The measure of the kingdom is not its visibility today, but the certainty that what God has hidden in the lump will in time leaven all of it.
