Luke 17:36 Meaning and Explanation

The third scene completes the sweep of hours: night in the bed, morning at the mill, day in the field. Together the pictures cover the whole round of human rest and labor — the day of the Son of man can intersect any of them.

The repetition is the message: wherever it finds us, that day will distinguish person from person, not place from place or trade from trade. No occupation guarantees readiness, and none prevents it; a field hand can be as prepared as a priest. So the call lands on every reader in every station: do today's work, and do it as one who belongs wholly to Christ.
