What Does Luke 19:47 Mean?
This verse sets the pattern of the final week: by day he teaches openly in the courts he has just cleansed, while the powers of the city, priestly, scholarly, and civic, close ranks against him. Luke lets the two clauses sit side by side, the teaching and the plotting.
There is a piercing echo in the wording. The Son of man came to seek and to save the lost, and now men seek to destroy him, and the verb for destroy is kin to the word for lost. Their worst will become his saving act, for in being destroyed he rescues the perishing.
