What Does Luke 20:34 Mean?
Jesus answers by drawing a line between two ages: 'this world,' the present age, and 'that world' of the resurrection (v. 35). In this age, generation succeeds generation under the shadow of death, and so men marry and women are given in marriage; life must continually be handed forward.
'Marrying and giving in marriage' names the ongoing arrangements of a mortal world — the very machinery the Sadducees' story runs on, where a widow is passed from brother to brother so that a family line will not die out. Jesus does not mock that order; God ordained it for this age. But he begins to lift their eyes: the age to come is not governed by death's necessities, and it cannot be measured by them.
