What Does Luke 21:18 Mean?
Set beside the previous verses, this promise startles: some of you shall be put to death, yet not a hair of your head shall perish. Jesus is not contradicting himself. He had already taught that the very hairs of the head are numbered by the Father (Luke 12:7), and that those who kill the body can do nothing more (Luke 12:4).
He is speaking of a keeping deeper than physical safety. Nothing of the disciple, not the smallest part, is finally lost to God, and even death cannot take from him what belongs to him. The believer is held in a security the sword cannot reach. The body may fall; the person, kept by Christ, does not perish.
