What Does Luke 21:26 Mean?
Jesus describes the inner toll of the last shaking: hearts failing, people fainting from fear and from dread anticipation of what is coming on the earth, as the very powers of heaven are shaken. It is a portrait of a world that has watched its securities fall and can see nothing beyond them.
Fear of the future is among the oldest human burdens, and Jesus does not mock it; he answers it. The difference between this verse and verse 28 is not the events but the watchers: the same shaking that empties one heart lifts another's head. Those who belong to the One who is coming need not faint before the things that come.
