What Does Luke 21:6 Mean?
To those admiring the temple's stones, Jesus answers with a prophecy of their complete overthrow. The days will come, he says, when not one stone will rest upon another. Within a generation it happened: in A.D. 70 Roman armies took Jerusalem, and the sanctuary was burned and leveled.
Nothing made by human hands, however sacred its use, is permanent. Jesus spoke this not in triumph but in sober truth, having already wept over the city (Luke 19:41-44). His word invites us to examine our own foundations. Buildings, institutions, and achievements can all be thrown down; only what is built on him and his words (Luke 21:33) survives every fall.
