What Does Luke 22:18 Mean?
As with the bread in verse 16, so with the cup: Jesus marks this night as a boundary. The next feast he keeps will be in the arrived kingdom. The vow gives the supper a horizon beyond the cross - he is certain not only of dying but of reigning.
For disciples about to watch their Master arrested, these words were a thread to hold: the story does not end at the tomb. The cup set down tonight will be lifted again at the feast of God (Matthew 26:29; Revelation 19:9). Hope, in Scripture, is not a mood but an appointment.
