What Does Luke 22:4 Mean?
The captains were officers of the temple guard - the men who would later make the arrest. Judas offered what the leaders lacked: inside knowledge of where Jesus could be taken quietly, away from the crowds they feared.
The word translated 'betray' means to hand over, and it tolls through the passion story: Judas hands Jesus to the priests, the priests to Pilate, Pilate to the soldiers. Yet beneath the treachery runs a deeper giving - 'This is my body which is given for you' (Luke 22:19); God 'delivered him up for us all' (Romans 8:32).
