The disciples scatter (Matthew 26:56), but Peter - to his credit - trails the arrest party through the dark streets to the high priest's residence, where the night interrogation will be held. He follows; yet 'afar off.'
'Afar off' is the hinge of Peter's fall: close enough to watch, far enough to feel safe - the distance at which courage erodes and denial becomes thinkable. Most failures of faith begin not with a decision to deny but with a decision to follow from farther back.
