What Does Luke 22:55 Mean?
The spring night was cold; servants and officers built a fire in the middle of the courtyard and settled in to wait out the hearing. Peter, hiding his connection to the prisoner, sat down in their circle - warming himself at the fire of his Master's accusers (John 18:18).
There was no sin in being cold, but there was peril in that seat: Peter is now embedded among Jesus' opponents with his identity a secret to be protected. The fire teaches how dangerous comfort becomes when it requires concealment. The light that warmed him also lit his face for recognition (verse 56) - anonymity rarely survives the firelight.
