They blindfold Jesus, strike him, and demand he prophesy who hit him.

What Does Luke 22:64 Mean?

The guards turn abuse into a game: blindfold the prophet, strike him, make him guess. The irony is total - at that very hour in the courtyard, his prophecy about Peter had come true to the syllable (verses 34, 60-61).

They mock him as a false prophet while his words prove true a stone's throw away. Unbelief often demands a sign while standing inside one. Jesus absorbs the blows without retort, 'as a sheep before her shearers is dumb' (Isaiah 53:7). The blindfold is on him, but the blindness is theirs - and still he goes forward to die for mockers, soldiers, and deniers alike (Luke 23:34).
