What Does Luke 23:30 Mean?
Jesus takes up the words of the prophet Hosea, who pictured a people under judgment crying to the mountains, “Cover us” (Hosea 10:8). The book of Revelation hears the same cry raised at the last day (Revelation 6:16).
It is the picture of terror preferring burial to facing what comes. But the gospel holds out another shelter: the one walking to Calvary is himself the hiding place, bearing judgment so that none who trust him need flee from God. Better to meet the Lord now in mercy than to call on mountains later. The cross is refuge offered before the storm.
