What Does Luke 23:4 Mean?
This is the first of three times in this chapter that the Roman judge will publicly declare Jesus innocent (see verses 14 and 22). The man with full authority to condemn finds nothing to condemn.
Heaven's estimate of Jesus is spoken, of all places, from a Roman judgment seat: no fault. Peter would later write that Christ “did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth” (1 Peter 2:22). The cross, then, is not a guilty man's sentence but an innocent man's gift; the Lamb is found without blemish before he is offered. Every declaration of his innocence makes the meaning of his death clearer — he dies, but not for anything he has done.
