What Does Luke 23:44 Mean?
The sixth hour is midday, the ninth mid-afternoon: at the sun's height, light fails. For three hours the central act of redemption is wrapped in darkness, as if creation itself drew a veil over its suffering Maker.
The prophet Amos had spoken of a day when God would “cause the sun to go down at noon” (Amos 8:9) — darkness as the sign of judgment. At Calvary, the judgment our sins deserved gathers over one Man. The Light of the world goes into the dark for us, so that, as he promised, whoever follows him “shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
