What Does Luke 24:18 Mean?
One of the two, Cleopas, answers with gentle exasperation: is this man the only visitor in Jerusalem who has not heard? Passover crowds filled the city, and the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth had been public news.
The irony is complete: the supposed stranger is the only one who truly knows what has come to pass. Cleopas explains the events to the Lord of the events. How often our complaints are addressed to a God we quietly assume is uninformed, when he alone understands the whole story. Christ listens anyway, patient with our partial sight.
