Their description is true but too small. A prophet mighty in deed and word — yes, as the crowds had said (Luke 7:16) and as Moses foretold (Deuteronomy 18:15). But he is more than a prophet, and their despair comes from measuring him by a category too narrow to hold him. Christ lets them speak their incomplete faith before he enlarges it.
