Now the stranger speaks with sudden authority. O fools — the word means those without understanding, unperceiving — and slow of heart to believe. The fault he names is not a weak mind but a sluggish heart toward all that the prophets have spoken.
Their trouble was selective belief: they had embraced the prophecies of the Messiah's glory and passed over the prophecies of his suffering. Jesus calls for faith in everything God has said, the hard texts with the bright ones.
