The seven miles end at the edge of Emmaus. Jesus, still unrecognized, makes as though he would go further — he will not invite himself in. The choice to receive him is left wholly to the two.
The Lord is courteous; he does not force his company on anyone. He shapes the moment so that desire must speak. Had they let him pass, the evening would have ended in polite ignorance; because they will press him to stay, it ends in revelation.
