What Does Luke 3:4 Mean?
Luke reaches back to Isaiah 40, where a herald announces comfort to exiled Israel: God himself is coming, so build him a road. Centuries later the voice finally cries in a literal wilderness, and the herald is John.
Before a king traveled, crews went ahead to clear and straighten his route. John's roadwork is done on hearts: wrongs confessed, paths of life made straight. And mark whose way he prepares. Isaiah's herald prepares the way of the Lord, and the One who then comes down John's prepared road is Jesus. To make a heart ready for him is still the most urgent work a person can do.
