What Does Luke 3:7 Mean?
Crowds pour out of the towns to the Jordan, and John greets them not with flattery but with fire. He will not let baptism become a charm, a quick washing that changes nothing. The prophet's question cuts: what are you really fleeing, and has it reached your heart?
A brood of vipers slips away from danger by instinct, gliding out of a burning field without ever ceasing to be venomous. John warns against religion of that kind, motion without transformation. The coming judgment is real, and so is the offered mercy; but mercy is for the turning, not the merely frightened. The verse still asks each of us whether we have come to God to be changed or only to feel safe.
