Into the packed gathering come men carrying a bed, and on it a man paralyzed — unable to walk, unable to bring himself anywhere. Their aim is wonderfully specific: not to ask for a formula or a token, but 'to lay him before him.' They believe that placing their friend in front of Jesus is enough.
