What Does Luke 5:19 Mean?
Every door is blocked by the multitude, so the friends take the outside stair to the flat roof, open the tiling, and lower the man, couch and all, into the one open space in the house — 'the midst before Jesus.' The crowd that came to see Jesus had become the obstacle to reaching him.
Love is inventive. Where the ordinary way is closed, determined faith finds a vertical one, willing to make a mess of a roof rather than carry a friend home unhealed.
