What Does Luke 5:3 Mean?
Of the two boats Jesus chooses Simon's — the man whose mother-in-law he had healed in Capernaum (Luke 4:38-39). He asks a small favor: push out a little from shore. The water becomes a natural amphitheater carrying his voice to the crowd, and he sits down, the customary posture of a teacher, and teaches the people from the boat.
Before Jesus asks Simon for his life, he asks him for his boat. Great callings often begin with small requests, and obedience in the little thing readies the heart for the greater one. Simon lends what he has and finds himself nearest of all to the word of God — close enough to hear every sentence that will soon ask everything of him.
